The Impoverished Critic

cinema to survive the test of time

3 Days of the Condor

Conspiracy Thriller.  1975 Paramount Pictures.  Robert Redford, Faye Dunaway, Max Von Sydow, Cliff Robertson.  The location is New York City, where CIA researchers read world publications in search of coded information.  Their Historical Society is hit and all are killed, except for one person who is out to lunch.  Joe Turner, code named Condor.   The “3 days” refers to the Condor’s quest for survival and search for truth.  Kathy Hale (Faye Dunaway) is kidnapped by Condor as he flees.

5 Stars.  Espionage with 70’s technology.  Quiet movie.  Not the loud music of today’s films.  Tension and fear grow as Condor works to understand why people are trying to kill him.  He searches his memory for any detail.  A relationship of trust develops between Joe Turner and Kathy Hale, in a world where no one can be trusted.  Their relationship is tense, desperate, and close.  They share an attitude, an acceptance of each other, a need to stand for something.

3 Days of the Condor 1975 trailer

I had forgotten what a pleasure it was to watch Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway.  They were and are of a class of their own.  They were made for closeups, both by looks and skill.
